Satawu to shut down SA ports over racial pay differences

May 29, 2019Zanele SabelaFreight and Goods Transport, News ReportNo comments

Members of the South African Transport and Allied Workers Union (Satawu) are planning a total shutdown of the country’s ports on Thursday.

The strike is over salary discrepancies between black and white port workers.

Negotiations between the union and Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) broke down last week.

“We’ve been negotiating with them for quite a while. We had two meetings after a strike certificate was issued, they said to us wait,” said Satawu spokesperson, Zanele Sabela.

“We said to them, let’s get a third party to come in and investigate this issue and make recommendations….they [TNPA] weren’t willing to do that so unfortunately, we don’t have another option but to go on strike,” Sabela said.
