The South African Transport and Allied Workers Union (Satawu) says more heads are likely to roll at the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa) following the suspension and placement on special leave on Wednesday of three of its executives.
“This decision follows the outcomes and ongoing investigations that have dogged Prasa of improper, irregular, corrupt, fruitless and wasteful expenditure by various employees of Prasa at all levels of the organisation. The suspension and placement on special leave of these executives is to ensure a fair process based on a principle of innocent until proven guilty,” the state-owned company has said in a statement.
The board also announced that it had terminated the employment contract of its former company secretary Matome Mohube with immediate effect.
Satawu’s Tinzi Lubabalo says while the union support the principle of innocent until proven guilty, it also expects to see further suspensions in the weeks to come.
We are worried about the fact that these reports have pointed to a number of people and we see that there has been no action that has been taken. Our members on the ground have been crying foul in light of the fact that they cannot even get the necessary increases that they deserve.
— Tinzi Lubabalo, National co-ordinator for Prasa – Satawu
