SATAWU Shocked at News of SAA Unbundling

February 18, 2019Zanele SabelaNews Report, Press Releases2 comments

South African Transport and Allied Workers’ Union (SATAWU) is shocked at news South African Airways (SAA) will be split into three separate business units.

News agency Reuters and Business Day are reporting SAA CEO Vuyani Jarana as having said this morning that the national airline will be split into domestic, regional and international business units, each with its own management. SATAWU organises workers at SAA and is aghast that Jarana could announce such a drastic step without consultation.

Coming hot on the heels of President Cyril Ramaphosa’s announcement during his State of the Nation Address, that energy utility Eskom would be unbundled into three entities – we have to wonder if this is government’s fashionable language around state-owned entities.

SATAWU will be writing a letter to Jarana requesting a meeting to discuss his announcement and how the plan will affect workers.
