SATAWU TO APPEAR BEFORE TRANSPORT COMMITTEE IN PARLIAMENT
The South African Transport and Allied Workers Union National Office Bearers (NOBs) led by its
President, Comrade Ntuthuzelo Mhlubulwana on the 28th of March 2023, and Thursday the 30th of
March 2023 appear before the Portfolio Committee responsible for Transport chaired by Mr
Mosebenzi Zwane, in Parliament to present its plan and argue the Privatisation of Transnet and
Corruption taking place at PRASA. The NOB’s will also argue the possibilities of retrenchments at
Autopax.
The South African Transport and Allied Workers Union has had numerous meetings with the
management from both entities. The Union has been very vocal against Privatisation of Transnet,
we have called for the Group CEO Ms Partia Derby, the board, and the management at Transnet
to be axed seeing that there is no plan nor improvements to save the entity. The Board was given
one mandate, but they failed to save the entity. If their plan to rescue the entity means selling it,
then there is They have shown us that they do not care about the future of this country in fact they
have shown the poor and the working class a middle finger.
The Union will never support anything that seeks to compromise the workers. We will continue
fighting this idea. We can not just sit down and watch all the entities being sold. Privatizing Transnet
will only benefit the minority and leave the poor suffering. Privatising Transnet means
retrenchment, we cannot allow that to happen. South Africa is already fighting against high rate of
unemployment, inequality and poverty we therefore need to prevent any possibilities of
retrenchments.
The South African Transport and Allied Workers Union believes that its appearance before the
Parliament will make a huge difference and will convince those in power not to go ahead with
privatizing the entity. We believe that the Committee responsible for Transport will do the right
thing and put the workers and the people of this country first. It is everyone’s responsibility to save
jobs and that is what the union vows to do until the end.
SATAWU will make its presentation accessible to the public after these sessions.
