Moves Afoot to End Week-long Strike

September 4, 2019Zanele SabelaFreight and Goods Transport, Press ReleasesNo comments

Negotiations to end the week-long strike by South African Transport and Allied Workers Union (SATAWU) members at Bakwena Weighbridges are set to continue today.

SATAWU members at the Bapong Weighbridge on the N4 and the Mantsole Weighbridge on the N1 downed tools last week citing dissatisfaction with their pay and benefits. Bakwena manages the weighbridges on behalf of Sanral.

Workers were unhappy with the companyโ€™s cost to company (CTC) pay structure and wanted their remuneration broken down into basic and benefits. They were also not impressed with the 5% annual increase management was offering.

At a meeting between union officials and the employer on Monday, it was agreed that a road show would be embarked on to explain the CTC to employees. The company also undertook to improve on the 5% pay increase initially offered.

If all goes well the strike could be over by end of today.
