South African Transport and Allied Workers’ Union (SATAWU) applauds the SA Police Service for arresting the men caught on video shooting two security officers outside Maponya Mall, Soweto last Wednesday.
The two armed-response officers were stationed outside the mall when two men approached the vehicle they were sitting in and shot them at close range. One officer was shot in the back of the head while the other was shot underneath the left ear. The faces of the two culprits were clearly visible as they opened the car doors to retrieve the lifeless officers’ firearms.
The video was captured by cameras fitted in the security vehicle and went viral after the footage was handed over to authorities.
SATAWU sends condolences to the family and friends of the officers.
The video demonstrated how vulnerable officers are to being ambushed. Following the incident, SATAWU urges security companies to put measures in place to ensure the safety of officers. Considering both officers were wearing bullet proof vests at the time of the shooting, it is crucial that companies install bullet proof glass on all vehicles used in the line of duty.
SATAWU applauds the police for working speedily to arrest the culprits. The two men were arrested in Klipspruit, Soweto today.
